Greymouth onto Hamner Springs

Yesterday we ventured up the West Coast in the fog, cloud and rain to Greymouth. This is where you can catch a train across the South Island to the East Coast.

Famous sign at the beach

Pretty miserable day and rough seas

On our way up the coast we stopped at a cool little town called Hokitika which is on the beach. A smallish town with lots of unique stores. This are is known for Jade, so lots of stores sell these items of jewelry and such. We also got to pickup a real Paua shell. They are really colourful and lots of tourist stuff is made from bits of it.

As you see it was raining and the sea was rough as. We wondered around the town taking in the local wares.

Next onto Greymouth for the night where it was still raining and the Lizzy's quilt store was closed till late Nov- she was a bit disappointed again. (nothing to spend money on :)  )

Grey river at Greymouth

The town had a lot to do with gold mining in the early days, so no eating the fish from the river in town.
They say too much heavy metal still and run off from farms.

Today we headed off inland, this time across and through mountain areas, where there were some nice mountain streams and great views in some areas. A nice bright and warm day today.

Mountain streams greenish colour

We stopped at a small town called Reeftown. Got its name from reefs of quartz as the gold was found in these veins. Lots of old mining gear around the town and a few places have the history about mining. The local info centre has a nice display worth seeing.

Lovely mural

Dedicated to the lost miners

Down the street was the Bearded mining Co Pty Ltd- a display of an old hut, and what it was like. Lots of old items that miners used inside.

Mining train from days of old

Next onto Hamner Spring where if you are rich you pay heaps for spar treatment or a family get away !! We avoided that and went for walk up Conical Hill which is a 30 min trip up a steep hill to see the views of the district. Quite a good trek and views.

That's it for today folks. Till the next blog.

Hi all, Here a brief overview of our 2 day adventure on Fraser Island with Fraser Island Explorer Tours. Here is a link to our trip in video format.  https://youtu.be/QY8tr093G4o We were picked up from our accommodation by our tour guide who then picked up some more of our group and headed to the barge to go across to the Island. It was very smooth no seasickness this time :) We got on the 4x4 wheel bus and headed inland to Lake Mackenzie. This was a very picturesque spot. The water was very cool and the sand as white as we've seen it. After this we headed to Central station , the old tree clearing head quarters. Next we headed for Lake Wobby which was a 45 min trek in and 45 out across lots of sand. It sits on a big sand-blow which will eventually disappear. A small fresh water lake with a couple of cat fish in it. Then off to our accommodation for the night. The next day we headed out to run the beach pretty much all day heading all the way up to Champagne Pools. We eventua...

Hervey Bay and the case of the missing whales.

Hi lovelies, It has been some 8 months since our last post.  Travel around the world has certainly changed in 2020. We had not planned to do too much traveling in the first half of the year, but we quickly discovered that us making that decision and the government telling us that we won't are two very different things. :-). Feeling the need for a bit of a break, and a touch of fishing we headed for Hervey Bay on Wednesday. We had a great drive up, even managed to stop for a quick chat with the lovely Shirley in Cooya.   On Thursday we headed for a quick trip to the information centre.  To my surprise Robbie wanted to book another whale watching cruise.  We spoke at length to the agent there and finally chose what was supposed to be the calmest day for the next week.  It was then off for a drive along the coast line from Point Vernon to Urangan.   The day was beautiful, though there were large patches of mist/fog that hung around some of the ...
