Melk Abbey

Hi all,
Yep you guessed it another church!!. This one is at Melk on the Danube. It was a brisk -2 C most of the time.
The gates of Heaven

This Abbey has been in existence for some 900 year as an Abbey and longer as a palace for the Bamburgs. It has been an important strategic place for over 2000 years. It was used originally as a fortress to fight off the impending Ottoman Turks. Austria was used as a sort of buffer between the Ottomans and the German empire. Once the threat was over the palace was turned over to the Franciscan Monks who have operated it since. It sits high atop the hill. Great location to view the surrounding valley.

The monks after all the conflicts etc wanted somewhere to represent heaven on Earth. Well they sure accomplished close to that. While hard to describe it was magnificent inside. No photos allowed inside but here are a couple of postcards we have taken a photo of to show you something of the place.

The dining hall was for the Queen of Austria, Maria Theresa (Sissi for short, she is well loved here in Austria and Hungary) It has an optical illusion on the ceiling to make it look larger than it is. You can't tell straight away only at some angles.

The monetarist is an active place. Used as a high school, church, monastery and of course tourism. The monks all have duties regarding the running of the Abbey.
Maria Theresa says "I would regret it if I had not been here"
After a look around with a guide we ventured down into the small town down the hill to see if we could get any more souvenirs etc. Not much was open though. Too early!!

We had to hurry the ship through a narrow and low part of the river so we caught the bus back to Grein then cruised the rest of the day.

While cruising we saw lots of mistletoe in the trees. It is protected here. We also passed by some locks. These are a wonder of engineering to get a ship this size raised by some 10-20 above the entry level and on to the next section  of river.
You ask, why do you need locks? Well, the river shallows out in places, so they build weirs across the river to block it off to keep the river navigable. We need to go through multiple locks during this cruise.

During the tour we have these QuietVox device that you use to listen to the guide who broadcasts of one of 6 channels. Very good invention as only you can hear it.

Look at the spelling :)

Hi all, Here a brief overview of our 2 day adventure on Fraser Island with Fraser Island Explorer Tours. Here is a link to our trip in video format.  https://youtu.be/QY8tr093G4o We were picked up from our accommodation by our tour guide who then picked up some more of our group and headed to the barge to go across to the Island. It was very smooth no seasickness this time :) We got on the 4x4 wheel bus and headed inland to Lake Mackenzie. This was a very picturesque spot. The water was very cool and the sand as white as we've seen it. After this we headed to Central station , the old tree clearing head quarters. Next we headed for Lake Wobby which was a 45 min trek in and 45 out across lots of sand. It sits on a big sand-blow which will eventually disappear. A small fresh water lake with a couple of cat fish in it. Then off to our accommodation for the night. The next day we headed out to run the beach pretty much all day heading all the way up to Champagne Pools. We eventually w

Hervey Bay and the case of the missing whales.

Hi lovelies, It has been some 8 months since our last post.  Travel around the world has certainly changed in 2020. We had not planned to do too much traveling in the first half of the year, but we quickly discovered that us making that decision and the government telling us that we won't are two very different things. :-). Feeling the need for a bit of a break, and a touch of fishing we headed for Hervey Bay on Wednesday. We had a great drive up, even managed to stop for a quick chat with the lovely Shirley in Cooya.   On Thursday we headed for a quick trip to the information centre.  To my surprise Robbie wanted to book another whale watching cruise.  We spoke at length to the agent there and finally chose what was supposed to be the calmest day for the next week.  It was then off for a drive along the coast line from Point Vernon to Urangan.   The day was beautiful, though there were large patches of mist/fog that hung around some of the coast.  We had a lovely wander along the

It's all about the birds.

Hi lovelies, Did you all manage to keep warm last night.  It was a little chilly here, which was not helped by the fact that we left the outer door to the van open.  What silly people we are. Today was such a beautiful day. We went for a short drive to the dam on the property. It is obvious that the dam is suffering from the lack of water, but we were blessed to see some gorgeous birds. On returning to the van we were met by a number of birds that decided it was time for their lunch. We are so blessed to have such a variety of birdlife around the van. Remember to sing the song - "There was one in the bed..... "   They are quite inquisitive,  but keep an eye on the humans just to make sure we are not going to do anything untoward. This gorgeous butcher bird decided that as I had vacated my chair it was all for him.  He entertained Rob with a concert.  He did not even seem to concerned when I returned. We were also
