Passau, Germany

Hello lovelies
We have had some changes to our trip due to falling water levels of the Danube river. The crew have done an amazing job in the past 2 days of trying to make sure we get to see cities, while still moving along to reach the area where safe passage is available for the rest of our voyage. This has meant a couple of bus trips after our tours as the boat has continued along the river instead of waiting for us. It has had some wonderful advantages for us.

Hello Santa

Old town of Passau
Today we got to spend the entire day in the beautiful town of Passau. We left the ship just after breakfast and headed to the town to meet with our guides. They have all been so knowledgeable.
This is one of the few towns that has not had buildings destroyed as a result of war. No changes can be made to the buildings, not even the colour of the paintwork. The buildings near the river have been built to cope with the yearly flooding. It is strange to have to be prepared for this to happen each year. Owners of the buildings cannot insure against the flood damage, so need to make sure their furniture etc is above the standard flood level.

One of the sweet things of the town are the chalk signs on door mantles. These are done by children, in groups of 3, on December 1st to bless the home. The numbers that are used represents the year, and the letters represent, the 3 wise men.
Lovely old doors here
This town also host a beautiful baroque church. The frescos on the roof are simply stunning. This church also boasts the largest pipe organ in a church in the world, there are 17,000 pipes with 230 registers.

Due to not being able to return to the boat we were treated to an amazing meal at a German restaurant. Apart for the sumptuous and abundant food, the view from the restaurant was amazing.
Lunch finished it was back on the bus to spend a few hours at the Christmas markets or wander the town. The markets were lovely. We also stopped at the cuckoo clock store and wandered the streets.
We did take a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in front of this very strange store selling Turkish smoking things.

Bong anyone? Very large
Eventually the cool negative temperatures got to us and we headed for a cafe near the bus depot for a hot chocolate. It was then back onto the bus for a 1 1/2 drive to catch up with the boat.
By tomorrow we hope to be back in deeper water and being able to return to our scheduled route.

Take care all.

Hi all, Here a brief overview of our 2 day adventure on Fraser Island with Fraser Island Explorer Tours. Here is a link to our trip in video format.  https://youtu.be/QY8tr093G4o We were picked up from our accommodation by our tour guide who then picked up some more of our group and headed to the barge to go across to the Island. It was very smooth no seasickness this time :) We got on the 4x4 wheel bus and headed inland to Lake Mackenzie. This was a very picturesque spot. The water was very cool and the sand as white as we've seen it. After this we headed to Central station , the old tree clearing head quarters. Next we headed for Lake Wobby which was a 45 min trek in and 45 out across lots of sand. It sits on a big sand-blow which will eventually disappear. A small fresh water lake with a couple of cat fish in it. Then off to our accommodation for the night. The next day we headed out to run the beach pretty much all day heading all the way up to Champagne Pools. We eventually w

Hervey Bay and the case of the missing whales.

Hi lovelies, It has been some 8 months since our last post.  Travel around the world has certainly changed in 2020. We had not planned to do too much traveling in the first half of the year, but we quickly discovered that us making that decision and the government telling us that we won't are two very different things. :-). Feeling the need for a bit of a break, and a touch of fishing we headed for Hervey Bay on Wednesday. We had a great drive up, even managed to stop for a quick chat with the lovely Shirley in Cooya.   On Thursday we headed for a quick trip to the information centre.  To my surprise Robbie wanted to book another whale watching cruise.  We spoke at length to the agent there and finally chose what was supposed to be the calmest day for the next week.  It was then off for a drive along the coast line from Point Vernon to Urangan.   The day was beautiful, though there were large patches of mist/fog that hung around some of the coast.  We had a lovely wander along the

A couple of days in Sydney.

Hi Lovelies, What a wonderful time we have had in Sydney.   Please note this post is very picture heavy, and pretty wordy as well.   Monday morning we left just after 9am to head into the city to visit my brother Michael.     I will admit that I was a little nervous of the traffic, which is why we waited until after the rush hour to leave.   We did very well I think and the GPS keeps us on track. I will admit that I was a little nervous of the traffic, which is why we waited until after the rush hour to leave.   We did very well I think and the GPS keeps us on track.  It took just over an hour to get to the docks were Mike was and is was so lovely to see him.     We pottered around and sat watching the river for a bit.   Had a spot of lunch and then set off to collect Seb (my nephew) from school.        School in inner Sydney suburbs is a bit of an eyeopener.   The schools are fenced and gates locked.   You cannot ent
