Day 9 Adventures in NZ - Taupo

The day started early with Rob off to learn about fly fishing for trout. A brisk start to the day with winds coming off the snow-capped mountains to the south of us and a big frost. Brrrrr

Rob and his guide left about 8.30am after we stood in the icy winds for ½ hr waiting for the pick to find him. They went 20 mins south into a fast-flowing icy stream. They got suited out in waders and boots and headed into the stream to try his luck. It was big learning curve with lots of things heaps different than beach and river fishing. Basically, floating the fly downstream with the current or slowing dragging the fly up stream against the current. Tricky to get the hang of “Line control” but fun anyway. No fish to be caught sadly.

After returning when headed off to the natural hot vents that feed into the cold river – big variation. This was a spot for kids and families to play swim or warm up in the stream.

On then to Huka Falls to see where the river drops down and masses of water flow through a narrow channel. This river flows all the way to Auckland some way off to the north of us. What a beautiful rich Jade green the river is.
We dropped in to the Honey Hive to see and look at all the bee related things that are made here locally from honey and do some taste testing.

Back home for dinner and another dip in the naturally heated pool here. Very relaxing at a temp around 34 deg C. Got to watch the Broncos match at the TV room (pity about that score line).

What we learnt today.
Things on maps are a lot further than they appear so did a bit of driving today to get to places.
Fly fishing takes a long time to master – years in fact.
Even though car parks here have allocated bays for big campers, the locals all fill them with Barbie cars!! Not amused

Hi all, Here a brief overview of our 2 day adventure on Fraser Island with Fraser Island Explorer Tours. Here is a link to our trip in video format.  https://youtu.be/QY8tr093G4o We were picked up from our accommodation by our tour guide who then picked up some more of our group and headed to the barge to go across to the Island. It was very smooth no seasickness this time :) We got on the 4x4 wheel bus and headed inland to Lake Mackenzie. This was a very picturesque spot. The water was very cool and the sand as white as we've seen it. After this we headed to Central station , the old tree clearing head quarters. Next we headed for Lake Wobby which was a 45 min trek in and 45 out across lots of sand. It sits on a big sand-blow which will eventually disappear. A small fresh water lake with a couple of cat fish in it. Then off to our accommodation for the night. The next day we headed out to run the beach pretty much all day heading all the way up to Champagne Pools. We eventua...

Three days in the snow.

Hi lovelies, We have had the most amazing 3 days at the Perisher Valley Snowfields. Warning this is a very text heavy post.  Photos are limited, you cannot take many while you ski/board.  Robbie will have a video soon. On Monday we headed up just for a drive and to see what was around.   The day was perfect.   Not too windy and bright and sunny. We parked at Bullock Flats and caught the Skitube to Perisher.   This is really the best way to get there.   Nice highway all the way, and while the train is a little expensive at $55.00 per head return it is preferable to an extra hour drive on roads that may be a little less than ideal.   There is also only limited parking at Perisher so the train is the way to go.   We had a bit of a look around Perisher before heading off to Blue Cow, again by Skitube. It was so lovely to wander around.      We were thankful that we hired boots as it wa...
