New Zealand Day 3 - Whitianga

Evening lovelies,

We awoke this morning at 5am, looked outside and snuggled straight back in bed. 😊. Eventually, around 7.30, we woke back up and got organised for the day.  A couple of chores and then a call to Britz and off to the auto electrician as our fridge was not working.

While Dallas had a look at the fridge we took a wander down to the harbour.  We are still amazed at how clean everything is and how clear the water is.

We found our new retirement home where I would take nothing but  feet photos facing east.  My view would never change as I would never move 😂

We also found a lovely old church where they encourage you to come in and have a look around.  St Andrew’s By the Sea was the first church built in the area, and the whole church is constructed with kauri timber.  We were shown around by the beautiful Julie, who also showed us the old entrance.  It was amazing, and we were blessed to be able to look around.

We wandered back to the see what Dallas had to say.  The fridge was shot.  Both Britz and Peninsula Auto Electric and Marine were very helpful.  It was organized that a new fridge would be driven up today and would be installed this afternoon.

We had a couple of hours so we headed off the see a bit more of the west coast up to Kuatunu.  It was another windy drive,  and a little windy too.

Beautiful scenery,
 lots of sheep,

 the odd letterboxes

 and a peculiar fence.

We stopped for lunch at Simpson’s beach, and I have to applaud Robbie for being such a gentleman and assisting me to get my foot shot today 😂.

We took the car back again to Dallas and headed off to take a ferry trip to go Ferry Landing.  An original name I think.  The ferry is also interesting in that it has a heater in the centre.  It obviously gets a tad cool here.

A walk up the hill to the old cemetery. Like most towns, even in Australia, there is a new section and a historic section.  It was very interesting to wander around, and the view from the top of the cemetery is wonderful.

We left there and wandered down to Maramaratotara Bay, where we spent a leisurely hour sitting watching the waves and the odd seagull who visited.

We did see a really cool sign on our trip down, and I could not resist a pic.

We eventually moved our very relaxed bodies, headed back towards the ferry, spotted the local library,
which u fortunately was closed, so consoled ourselves by having an ice cream.  We were visited by the store cat, who was very impressed that I dropped some of mine.  That is of course until he had a little brain freeze.  Poor thing.

Back across the ferry to where a couple of long line fishing boats were.  I was very interested to see that they pump brine into the boats to keep the fish.  Also the way the hooks are stored before use.  We also watched one of the fisherman cut up a very large squid to use as bait on the hooks.

We the made our way back to see how our van was going.  Alas the new fridge had only just arrived, so it would be another 1/2 hour or so before it was ready. Robbie decided we had walked enough so we waited in reception until it was ready.  Of course the new fridge has different rear fittings to the old one, so some gentle adjustments were applied to have it fit.  Good news is that we now have a working fridge.

For a day that seemed like we would not be able to get much done, we had an amazing day, saw lots, and Robbie even got a nap.

Things I learned today

The supermarket sells live fresh muscles.

Children in New Zealand are taught not to litter
We found a beach that was nearly covered in pippi shells.

Sheep have tails.
"wh" is pronounced as an "f" sound.
Clover has a little heart in the leaf.

and there is no excuse for not knowing the fishing rules.

All for tonight lovelies.
Have a most amazing night.

Hi all, Here a brief overview of our 2 day adventure on Fraser Island with Fraser Island Explorer Tours. Here is a link to our trip in video format.  https://youtu.be/QY8tr093G4o We were picked up from our accommodation by our tour guide who then picked up some more of our group and headed to the barge to go across to the Island. It was very smooth no seasickness this time :) We got on the 4x4 wheel bus and headed inland to Lake Mackenzie. This was a very picturesque spot. The water was very cool and the sand as white as we've seen it. After this we headed to Central station , the old tree clearing head quarters. Next we headed for Lake Wobby which was a 45 min trek in and 45 out across lots of sand. It sits on a big sand-blow which will eventually disappear. A small fresh water lake with a couple of cat fish in it. Then off to our accommodation for the night. The next day we headed out to run the beach pretty much all day heading all the way up to Champagne Pools. We eventually w

Hervey Bay and the case of the missing whales.

Hi lovelies, It has been some 8 months since our last post.  Travel around the world has certainly changed in 2020. We had not planned to do too much traveling in the first half of the year, but we quickly discovered that us making that decision and the government telling us that we won't are two very different things. :-). Feeling the need for a bit of a break, and a touch of fishing we headed for Hervey Bay on Wednesday. We had a great drive up, even managed to stop for a quick chat with the lovely Shirley in Cooya.   On Thursday we headed for a quick trip to the information centre.  To my surprise Robbie wanted to book another whale watching cruise.  We spoke at length to the agent there and finally chose what was supposed to be the calmest day for the next week.  It was then off for a drive along the coast line from Point Vernon to Urangan.   The day was beautiful, though there were large patches of mist/fog that hung around some of the coast.  We had a lovely wander along the

It's all about the birds.

Hi lovelies, Did you all manage to keep warm last night.  It was a little chilly here, which was not helped by the fact that we left the outer door to the van open.  What silly people we are. Today was such a beautiful day. We went for a short drive to the dam on the property. It is obvious that the dam is suffering from the lack of water, but we were blessed to see some gorgeous birds. On returning to the van we were met by a number of birds that decided it was time for their lunch. We are so blessed to have such a variety of birdlife around the van. Remember to sing the song - "There was one in the bed..... "   They are quite inquisitive,  but keep an eye on the humans just to make sure we are not going to do anything untoward. This gorgeous butcher bird decided that as I had vacated my chair it was all for him.  He entertained Rob with a concert.  He did not even seem to concerned when I returned. We were also
