Day 5 in Omaru

A bit of a slow start to the morning.

Heritage precinct penny-farthing

After breakfast we had plans visit to the heritage precinct. My joyous plans for this were slightly saddened last night when I learned that the bookbinding store that I had specifically wanted to see was no longer here. 😩

Oh well. Disappointment over we set off to explore the other shops on offer.

Steam Punk museum

The area is quite lovely. Even with the late hour it was relatively quiet.

The area has some lovely buildings, many filled with eateries, and others with art/craft/gift stores. We did manage to find some treats to purchase.

Natural Limestone carving - shop with live carving
Paua shell - top penguin

We then headed to a quilt store we had been directed told about. More treats to purchase. 😉

Across the road from that we found a museum that displayed some early artifacts and scientific specimens and the evolution of unmentionables 🤣🤣

Then back to the motel for lunch and a short rest. We did try and find a beach for afternoon tea however we discovered that there are only rocks and no beach as such. So back to the motel for another rest and to get ready for our penguin experience tonight.

We have just finished the Oamaru Penguins experience. It was wonderful. We saw approximately 300 blue penguins come in tonight. They were so cute. Unlike our previous penguin experiences this one allows for no photography at all. I must say I think it actually made the experience so much more special. We were totally focused on watching and not trying to get photos. An experience I would thoroughly recommend.

As we left the viewing platform we were able to wander very quietly through the nesting area. A chance to see the family groupings and hear their most horrendous vocalizations. 🤣

Penguins are microchipped and are scanned and weighed as they pass

The performance ended with an additional show by two very fat and fluffy bunnies and a duel between two very cranky seals.

Fur seals on the rocks - no they don't bother or try to eat penguins.

Altogether a wonderful day.

Hi all, Here a brief overview of our 2 day adventure on Fraser Island with Fraser Island Explorer Tours. Here is a link to our trip in video format.  https://youtu.be/QY8tr093G4o We were picked up from our accommodation by our tour guide who then picked up some more of our group and headed to the barge to go across to the Island. It was very smooth no seasickness this time :) We got on the 4x4 wheel bus and headed inland to Lake Mackenzie. This was a very picturesque spot. The water was very cool and the sand as white as we've seen it. After this we headed to Central station , the old tree clearing head quarters. Next we headed for Lake Wobby which was a 45 min trek in and 45 out across lots of sand. It sits on a big sand-blow which will eventually disappear. A small fresh water lake with a couple of cat fish in it. Then off to our accommodation for the night. The next day we headed out to run the beach pretty much all day heading all the way up to Champagne Pools. We eventua...

Three days in the snow.

Hi lovelies, We have had the most amazing 3 days at the Perisher Valley Snowfields. Warning this is a very text heavy post.  Photos are limited, you cannot take many while you ski/board.  Robbie will have a video soon. On Monday we headed up just for a drive and to see what was around.   The day was perfect.   Not too windy and bright and sunny. We parked at Bullock Flats and caught the Skitube to Perisher.   This is really the best way to get there.   Nice highway all the way, and while the train is a little expensive at $55.00 per head return it is preferable to an extra hour drive on roads that may be a little less than ideal.   There is also only limited parking at Perisher so the train is the way to go.   We had a bit of a look around Perisher before heading off to Blue Cow, again by Skitube. It was so lovely to wander around.      We were thankful that we hired boots as it wa...
